What to Expect During Your Exam

Your Driver’s Permit Medical Exam includes:

  • General physical examination

  •  Vision assessment (eye test)

  •  Blood pressure & heart rate check

  •  Review of medical history

  •  Certification of fitness to drive

The entire process is straightforward and typically completed in 10 minutes. All forms are completed on-site and stamped according to Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT) standards.

In Trinidad and Tobago, a medical exam for a driver’s permit is required under specific circumstances, as outlined by the Licensing Division of the Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT).

You are required to complete a Driver’s Medical Examination if you are:

  1. Applying for or renewing a Driver’s Permit for the following classes:

    • Class 6 – Omnibuses
    • Class 7 – Track Tractors, Motor Cranes & Track Cranes (Motor vehicles not specified in Classes 1 to 6)
  2. Renewing a Driver’s Permit at age 65 or older:

    • Drivers aged 65 and over must submit a valid medical certificate with each permit renewal.

    • Renewals are only allowed for 2-year periods at a time once you reach this age bracket.

  3. Reapplying after a suspension or medical condition:

    • If your licence was revoked, suspended, or you’re returning to driving after a major illness or surgery, you may be asked to complete a medical exam as part of your reinstatement.
